In an attempt to try to get all of my miles in before going to Miami next weekend (I'm not sure why I've set this as a goal...there will still be plenty of January left when I get back), I've gone a little run-crazy. I'm up to 60.1 so far, and we're only 15 days into January. So needless to say, my poor shin splints are throwing a full blown temper tantrum.
I'll punish them for that by running up to 65 (or higher!) tomorrow.
Running club was particularly interesting this week, due to the snowy/icy conditions on the sidewalks. I think my running shoes are still not completely dry from the puddles that I couldn't possibly seem to avoid.
I'm ready for slightly warmer running weather.

Football
For one reason or another, I love running on a treadmill during games (usually football or basketball). Being that I am so goal oriented, it is easy to say that I will run for an entire quarter. You wouldn't think that this would allow for much mileage, but you would not BELIEVE how long a quarter can go on during football.
Today I went to the gym to run because it is so cold and snowy. I ran for 4 miles and then realized that the Chiefs/Ravens playoff game was on, so then I decided to keep running for the first quarter of the game. I hadn't run more than 6 miles since October, so this was a bit of a challenge and when one of the teams called for a challenge, I had to talk myself down off of a ledge. ;)
But I made it and ran a whopping 8.1 this morning! This brings the monthly total to 38.1, so I am already over halfway to my goal of 75 for the month. Whew! And now, I will enjoy the rest of the football game on my couch while icing my poor aching legs.

I think running is much more enjoyable when in the company of friends. This past summer, I decided to join a running club (which thankfully also includes beer), and it is quite nice to be able to continue this club even in the middle of January in Denver. Running on the treadmill is fine and all, but there is something so relaxing about a 5K outside in the dead of winter.

2011...900 miles?!
Well, I only kept a blog once before. It was a xanga blog, back when I thought I was really funny (to give myself some credit - I was pretty funny). But now, with the inspiration of Ms. Brown (a fellow runner, colleague, and friend), I decided to try a running blog as well.
I've set a goal the last two years to run a certain number of miles. In 2009, it was 700 miles. 2010 led me through 800 miles, so naturally in 2011 I am going for 900 miles. This boils down to 75 miles a month. A piece of cake, barring a lack of injuries, natural disasters, or swine flu.
On a sidenote, I also am aiming for about 5,000 crunches a month. This has so far left me unable to sneeze without crying a little.
I also thought it would be a super idea to start eating a little healthier and tried an "extra lean turkey burger" this evening. It was not good. And now that I have tried that and have run a nice 16.5 miles so far this year, I am going to go finish my bottle of wine.
Happy New Year to all.
